Abstract :

Pain is a common medical complaint and most of the diseases have a component of pain. Currently drugs which are used to regulate the pain in most of the medical systems are narcotics and non- narcotics and have specific side and toxic effect. As per the research evidence, quantification study of “Piperine” in parts of Piper nigrum has confirmed presence of Piperine in root also. Many researches have been done in fruit to evaluate the different pharmacological actions relate in pain management but no any researches in root. For the beneficial of people who suffer with pain medication and standardization of analgesics in Siddha Medical system researcher has selected the root of Piper nigrum (“Sevviyam”) in form of powder for analgesic activity by using hot plate method. Objective To assess the analgesic potential of root of Piper nigrum (Sevviyam). Methodology It is a randomized comparative animal study by using Eddy’s hot plate method.Fifteen Albino rats were divided into three groups and food was withdrawn 12 hours prior to drug administration and received. 1. Control group: Distilled water 5ml/kg(p.o.) 2. Standard group :Diclofenac sodium in distilled water at a dose of 3.1mg 3.Test group: Root powder of Piper nigrum 41.33 mg. Hot plate regulated at temperature 55 0c and rats were placed on it.The reaction time period was recorded before and at 30,60,90,120 and 150 Min.time interval after giving the drugs as basal reaction time. Result “P” value of test group was significant compared with control group and it exhibited 78.12% inhibition percentage, but standard drug treated group exerted maximum 61.05%. Conclusion Root of Piper nigrum (Sevviyam) shown relatively higher level of inhibition percentage for pain compared with standard drug . Pharmacological action of root of Piper nigrum (Sevviyam )which is mentioned in Siddha Medical text(“Kunapaadam porut panpiyal”) was proven through this scientific evaluation.
