Abstract :

Climate change, environmental degradation, pollution and other adverse effects of improper waste management in Africa has necessitated the introduction of waste management and recycling education which is meant to enable children and adults to respond to these environmental problems. Waste management and recycling education encourages people to take action towards improving life and protecting the environment by using materials that would otherwise be considered as waste as raw materials for recycling new products. The aim of this study is to analyze the essential benefits of waste management and recycling education in Africa. Many developing countries in Africa are struggling towards development and improving their living conditions. An appropriate waste management and recycling education at a national and regional level is a milestone that must be achieved in order to improve living standards, health and environment in Africa. The establishment of an efficient waste management and recycling education will contribute to enhancing the resource efficiency of these countries and thus achieve sustainable development in the long-term. Through our literature review and participant observation, this study identifies the need for waste management and recycling education across communities and institutions in Africa in order to enhance their effectiveness and efficiency for sustainable economic growth and development. By teaching the society about the benefits of waste management and recycling, industries are able to cut on costs of raw materials. This reduced consumption of raw materials creates employment opportunities at all levels of the industry, as workers are needed for collection, sorting, processing, storage, and marketing of the new products. This paper is therefore very significant as it explores new opportunities, practices and policies for waste management and recycling education in Africa.
