Tuberculosis arthritis (TB) accounts for approximately 1 to 3% of all tuberculosis cases and approximately 10 to 11% of extrapulmonary cases. Tuberculosis arthritis mainly affects the large weight-bearing joints, especially the hips, knees and ankles, and sometimes causes smaller non-weight-bearing joints. The diagnosis of tuberculous arthritis is often delayed due to a lack of awareness, an insidious onset, a lack of characteristic early radiographic signs and often a lack of constitutional or pulmonary involvement. Current and past intense efforts in diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive interventions have focused on pulmonary tuberculosis in adults, but tuberculous arthritis has been relatively neglected. There is an urgent need to continue research, understanding and prevention of TB arthritis. In this article, we review the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment principles of tuberculous arthritis.
