Suicidology is the empirical study of suicidal behavior, the causes of suicidality and the prevention of suicide. Suicidology encompasses several various areas and disciplines, the two main ones being psychology and sociology. Approximately one million people die per year from suicide, which is a death rate of sixteen per 100,000, or one death every forty seconds. Suicide is largely preventable with the right acts, awareness of suicide, and a shift in society's perception of suicide to make discussion of suicide more appropriate. There are several research points within suicidology. Suicidology studies not only suicide death and attempted suicide but also partial self-destruction, suicidal ideation, parasuicide, and attitudes and self-destructive behaviors.
