Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of vertebral arthritis, mainly affecting young men, which eventually causes ankylosis of the vertebral and sacroiliac joints. It mainly affects the joints of the spine and the sacroiliac joint of the pelvis. In severe cases, complete fusion and stiffness of the spine may occur. The signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis often appear gradually, the peak of appearance being between 20 and 30 years old.
