Oncology in hematology as a specialty has been possible due to the evolution of the science of hematology, which developed microscopy to describe the morphology of blood cells and methods of quantifying these elements. Before we could define pediatric blood diseases, it was necessary to establish normal blood values of infancy and childhood. The unique characteristics of newborn blood have been the subject of many preliminary studies. Once normal values were established, specific blood diseases and hematological syndromes in children began to be described in Europe and the United States. Pediatric hematology in oncology is a large and complex field that includes disturbances of the multi-formed blood elements and their precursors in the bone marrow, as well as fibrinolytic coagulation systems in plasma, the reticuloendothelial system and malignant tumors of the blood and solid tissues and organs. The interactions between blood and nutrition have long been important areas of study. Advances in pediatric oncology have been particularly dramatic over the past 50 years. Thanks to multimodal therapy, including combination chemotherapy, more than 80% of children with cancer can now be cured. Over the past 50 years, Pediatric Hematology Oncology has increasingly used the tools of the "new biology": immunology, biochemistry, enzymology, genetics and molecular genetics and others.
