Psychiatric epidemiology is a discipline that studies the causes (etiology) of mental illnesses in society, as well as conceptualizing and mental illness prevalence. It is a more general epidemiologic subfield. It has origins in early 20th century sociologic studies. Though sociological exposures are still commonly studied in psychiatric epidemiology, the field has since expanded to study a wide range of genetic exposures, environmental risk factors. Neuroscientific techniques such as MRI are increasingly being used to investigate the mechanisms behind how exposures to risk factors may affect psychological problems and the neuroanatomic substrate underlying psychiatric disorders. The team participates in a variety of population-based psychiatric and behavioral illness research that cover the course of life from in utero to the elderly, usually with prospective and developmentally focused research. Mental and behavioral conditions pose a major burden on public health, and are one of the world's leading causes of disability.
