Preterm birth is the condition in which the birth occurs before the actual gestation age.In humans the normal gestation period is 36 weeks but in some cases the birth occurs before this period such condition is specifically known as premature birth. Symptoms of preterm labor like uterine contractions which occur more often than every ten minutes and the leaking of fluid from the vagina. Premature newborn are at greater risk for cerebral palsy, delays in development, hearing problems and sight problems. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, immature lungs, difficulty regulating body temperature, poor feeding and slow weight gain. Premature babies may need longer and more intense nursery care, medication and sometimes surgery.
