Phenytoin is an anti-seizure medication useful for the prevention of tonic-clonic seizures and focal seizures. Majorly this Phenytoin Therapy is used to treat Epilepsy. Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder with recurrent seizures due to a chronic underlying process. Phenytoin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Phenytoin is used to control certain type of seizures, and to treat and prevent seizures that may begin during or after surgery to the brain or nervous system. It works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Approximately 40-50% of the patients treated with phenytoin develop aesthetically disfiguring enlargement of the gingivae. Whenever occurs, this adverse effect of phenytoin, lasts throughout the period of therapy and continues further with a severe reduction in the quality of life of the affected individual.
