Genomics is an interdisciplinary biological field that focuses on the structure , function, evolution, mapping and genome editing. A genome is the full set of DNA that an organism has, including all its chromosomes. In comparison to genetics, which refers to the study of individual genes and their inheritance functions, genomics attempts to collectively identify and measure all of an organism's genes, their interrelations and influence on the organism. Genes can direct protein production with the aid of enzymes and messenger molecules. Proteins in turn form structures of the body such as organs and tissues, as well as control chemical reactions and carry signals between cells. Genomics also includes genome sequencing and analysis by using high-performance DNA sequencing and bioinformatics to assemble and interpret functions. Advances in genomics have triggered a revolution in research and systems biology based on discovery to facilitate understanding of even the most complex biological systems such as the brain.
