Newborn Care Practices In Home Deliveries

Practices such as heating the birthplace, applying mustard oil to the umbilical cord stump, and bathing the baby soon after birth were common in urban areas. Early initiation of breastfeeding, use of pre-cooked foods and breastfeeding of another woman are also common practices in urban areas. Most deliveries took place in a separate room or in a place inside the house, which is similar to a report from a previous study. A previous study had pointed out that barn deliveries contributed to higher rates of infant mortality in remote rural areas of Nepal. Such practices were not reported in our study. Studies in rural areas have highlighted the role of the mother-in-law in assisting with childbirth and caring for the newborn. But in our study, the mother-in-law was only present during childbirth in a small proportion (5%) of home births. More than half of the deliveries were followed by neighbors. Such a difference may be due to the demographic structure of the urban population in which many families can be economic migrants and nuclear families.
