Inhalations of sporangiospores, occasionally by ingestion of contaminated food are acquired by humans. The incidence of mucormycosis is rising globally. Review of 851 cases, provides a different indication that the disease burden is higher in Europe than in Asia. Incidence of diabetes mellitus is alarmingly high, which may lead to a rise in the incidence of mucormycosis in developing countries. It is linked to intense immunosuppression in haematological malignancies and transplant recipients.
