Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem due to the difficulty in treating the disease and the increased risk of spread of drug-resistant isolates in the community. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2008 (WHO / HTM / TB / 2009.426), nearly 30,000 cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have been reported worldwide. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is also a major problem in Turkey. The population of Turkey is 74,877,000 and the incidence of tuberculosis is 25 per 100,000. According to the WHO report, the number of patients diagnosed with MDR-TB in Turkey was 240 in 2008 However, its incidence and prevalence may be higher due to underreporting to health authorities. Turkey is a geographical bridge between Europe and Asia and has received a considerable number of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the countries of Asia. In addition, local population movements from rural areas to urban areas and between cities are significant. Studies on the molecular epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis could help follow the transfer pathway of resistant strains. In Turkey, molecular analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains has only been carried out in regional studies. There are also a small number of studies on the molecular epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Turkey. In this study, we sought to determine the genetic diversity and the clonal relationship of drug-resistant strains isolated from patients living in our region, western Turkey, using IS6110 RFLP and spoligotyping methods.
