Lymphoma Research

The Lymphoma Research Foundation of America (LRFA) was born out of patient need — one patient's. Ellen Glesby Cohen. Diagnosed in 1989 with low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), Ellen set about trying to find out all she could about a disease she had never heard of before.Married to a physician, Ellen had easier access to medical material than most patients, but was discouraged by what she found. Most of the information were outdated, and there were few research projects devoted specifically to lymphoma, even though this disease had nearly doubled in incidence since the early 1970s.Among her circle of friends, Ellen was the only mother with a newborn, a 2 1/2-year-old, and an incurable cancer. While other mothers celebrated their children's every achievement, Ellen often wondered if she would live to see her children finish grade school. With no one to turn to for support and understanding, it was not long before she began to feel completely alone. While recovering from chemotherapy treatments that had landed her in the hospital for an extended stay, Ellen decided to fight back. Realizing that research was the only source of hope for the future, her mission was clear: organize, raise money for research, educate others, make her voice heard. Armed with her Rolodex and the business cards of every person she had ever met, Ellen began the arduous task of building a network of family members, friends, physicians and friends of friends. The result was the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, incorporated in 1991 it
