LPL plays a pivotal role in lipids and lipoprotein metabolism. The main functions of LPL include the hydrolysis of TG-rich lipoproteins and the release of non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), which are absorbed and used for metabolic energy in peripheral tissues such as muscles, or are re-esterified in the TG and stored in adipose tissue. The balance between these competing effects could determine whether the increase in LPL activity will lead to a decrease in weight gain or an increase in adiposity through increased rates of TG fat storage. An imbalance in LPL activity can alter the plasma TG partitions between muscle and adipose tissue, thereby influencing insulin resistance and obesity. Together, journal articles in a particular area are often called literature. Journal articles are most often primary research articles. However, they can also be review articles. These types of items have different purposes and requirements. Sometimes an article describes a new tool or method. Because articles in scientific journals are specific, meticulously cited, and peer-reviewed, journal databases are the best place to search for information on previous research on your species. Without experience in the field, journal articles can be difficult to understand - however, you do not need to understand an entire article in order to gain valuable information.
