Yoga is fundamentally a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is a collaboration of art and science of healthy living. The word 'Yoga' is derivative of the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite’. Yoga aids the body to relax and lowers stress levels. It provides three important elements- meditation, breathing and poses, which help to regulate heart rate variability and lower stress levels. Lowering the heart rate makes body calm, and it can able to respond to stress positively. Yoga has been found to progress quality of life, reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression and back pain. It has become an alternate way to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Perhaps not surprisingly, yoga has shown to improve fitness, strength and flexibility, according to the alternative medicine centre. Yoga poses stretch body muscles and increases the range of motion. Yoga is not considered aerobic exercise, but the more athletic varieties such as power yoga, make people sweat. Even though yoga is not aerobic, some research finds it can be just as good as aerobic exercise for improving health.
