In the interferon band, interferon beta-1a (also interferon beta 1-alpha) is a cytokine used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). Mammalian cells produce it, while the interferon beta-1b is produced in modified E. Coli. Some claims have been made that the rate of MS relapses produced by Interferons is about 18–38 per cent reduction. Interferon beta was not shown to slow the progression of disability. Interferons are not a cure for MS (there is no known cure); the claim is that interferons, if started early and continued for the duration of the disease, can slow the disease 's progress. The clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), that is, a single attack of a single symptom, is the earliest clinical presentation of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis; There's a possible subacute demyelination attack during a CIS that should be included in the spectrum of MS phenotypes. Interferon therapy after an initial attack reduces the likelihood of clinically confirmed MS progressing.
