Information technology (IT) is the use of computers for data or information storage, retrieval, transmission and manipulation. IT is typically used in the context of business operations as opposed to personal or entertainment technologies. IT is considered to be a subset of ICT (Information and Communications Technology). An IT system is generally an information system, a communications system or, more specifically, a computer system – including all hardware, software and peripheral equipment – that is operated by a limited group of users. Since the Sumerians in Mesopotamia established writing in about 3000 BC, humans processed collected, manipulated and communicated information. Devices have been used for thousands of years to aid calculation, probably initially in the form of a tally stick.
