The first bone marrow transplant took place in 1949 with studies that demonstrated the protection offered to the spleen of mice at an otherwise fatal dose of radiation. In 1960, studies in dogs have provided important information on bone marrow transplantation in exogamic species, results applicable to humans. Dogs have been shown to be able to withstand 2-3 times the lethal dose of total body irradiation with an infusion of collected bone marrow cells and a cry kept before irradiation.

Allergic and immune diseases are a major health problem for millions of people. The strategy of the Laboratory of Immunogenetics and Allergology (LIGA) is to strengthen its skills in applied research, to develop competitive fundamental research and to create an optimal environment to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of patients with diseases allergic and immune mediated. The research is carried out in close collaboration with the national immunology and allergology unit of the CHL.

LIGA aims to carry out high quality basic research focused on:
• Characterization at the protein and DNA level of 3 major families of animal allergens: lipocalins, serum albumin and by albumin
• Analysis of the cellular immune response, including cellular regulation mechanisms to certain allergens belonging to these families of proteins
• Analyze the interactions between the nervous system and the immune system by studying the effects of several neurotrophins on natural killer cells
• Study of the functional cellular modification observed in TAP deficiency Secondly, the laboratory uses its research potential to improve diagnosis and patient care. That implies:
• Development of reagents for the in vitro detection of patient awareness of food and respiratory allergens
• Development of protein and DNA reagents to detect and trace animal allergens and proteins of animal origin.
