Hyperkalemia

High potassium or "hyperkalemia" is a medical condition when too much potassium is found in your blood. Your body requires potassium. It's a substantial nutrient found in many of the foods you eat. Potassium helps to work the right way for your nerves and muscles like your back. But excessive potassium can be dangerous in your blood. It has the potential to cause serious heart problems. The most common causes include: Kidney disease. Hyperkalemia can occur when your kidneys are not functioning well. It is the kidney’s job to balance the amount of potassium absorbed in with the amount lost in urine. Potassium is taken in by the food you eat and the fluids you drink. The kidneys filter it and it gets lost through the urine. In the early stages of kidney diseases, a diet which is high in potassium should be taken. Eating too much potassium-high food can also cause hyperkalemia, particularly in persons with advanced kidney disease. Foods are high in potassium, such as cantaloupe, honeydew melon, orange juice and bananas. Drugs that avoid lack of enough potassium in the kidneys. Some drugs can keep your kidneys from getting enough potassium out of them. This can cause increases in your potassium levels.
