Most people take a combination of three antiretroviral drugs, although a combination of two drugs is now also possible.

In a combination of three drugs, the first two drugs are sometimes called the "backbone" of the HIV treatment combination. These are two drugs in the class of nucleoside / nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

Tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine can be given together in a single combination tablet (available as a generic or Truvada brand). Similarly, tenofovir alafenamide and emtricitabine are available as combined tablets (Descovy).

The backbone should be taken with a third medication. There are several options:
