HIV Co-Infection

Tuberculosis is a significant health warning, especially for people living with HIV. People living with HIV are more likely than others to get sick with TB. Globally, tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of death among people living with HIV.

Without treatment, as with other opportunistic infections, HIV and tuberculosis can work together to shorten lifespan. Latent TB infection, HIV infection is the best known risk factor for developing TB disease.

People with HIV who also have latent TB infection or TB disease can be treated effectively. The first step is to make sure that people living with HIV get tested for TB infection. In case of tuberculosis infection, additional tests are necessary to rule out tuberculosis. The next step is to start treatment for latent TB infection or TB disease based on the test results.

Untreated latent TB infection can quickly progress to TB in people living with HIV because the immune system is already weakened. And without treatment, tuberculosis can progress from disease to death.

Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options for people living with HIV who also have latent TB infection or TB disease.
