HIV Antiretroviral Therapy

Antiretroviral therapy (also known as antiretroviral therapy or ART) are the drugs that treat HIV. Many people living with HIV are on treatment and remain healthy. Current HIV treatment is not a cure for HIV, but it can keep HIV under control very effectively.
ART works by maintaining a low level of HIV in your body (your viral load). This allows your immune system to recover and stay strong.
Keeping your viral load low also helps prevent transmission of HIV.
With good health care and treatment, many people living with HIV live as long as people who do not have HIV.
You can continue to have relationships, work or study, plan, have a family - everything you would have done before you were diagnosed with HIV.
Effective treatment also means that some people living with HIV reach an undetectable viral load. This means that the virus exists in such small quantities in their blood that it does not affect their health and that there is no risk of transmitting the virus to others. But remember that if you stop taking your medication, your viral load will increase again.
