A type of inherited disorder in which there is a higher-than-normal risk of several types of cancer. Hereditary cancer syndromes are affected by mutations in many genes passed from parents to children. In a hereditary cancer syndrome, several patterns of cancer may be seen within families. The similar hereditary cancer syndromes related to women’s cancer include hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome, Peutz–Jeghers syndrome, and hereditary diffuse gastric cancer, Li–Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome. If a hereditary cancer risk estimate recommend an increased risk of a hereditary cancer syndrome, referral to a specialist in cancer genetics or a health care provider with expertise in genetics is suggested for expanded gathering of family history information, risk assessment, education, and counseling.
