Recent advances in the basic medical sciences, particularly cell biology and genomics, hold great promise for the future development of all aspects of hematology practice. They will also intrude on previously neglected areas of hematology, including hematology involving the care of the growing number of elderly patients and the complex problems of hematology practice in developing countries. To make the most of these new developments, it will be necessary to review the training schemes of hematologists of the future at all levels. In short, it will be important to try to design and develop various career paths to train hematologists, including those who wish to work full time in basic research, combine research with clinical practice or devote all their time to clinical work and teaching.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the use of the word "academic" in a number of ways, including "relating to education" or "not of practical relevance". The first definition of course applies to all aspects of medical education at all levels, while the second is consistent with recent attacks on the basic biological sciences, which claim that they have played little or no role. no role in improving health care (Chalmers et al, 2014). However, an analysis of the history of the development of hematology over the past four hundred years (Wintrobe, 1980) suggests that many of its clinical successes were based on basic research motivated by curiosity. Some examples are presented in the table
