One of the main threats to biological diversity is human-induced habitat loss. As a result, most facets of biological diversity defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are declining and showing declining trends. Protected areas (PAs) are considered an integral part of the conservation of global biodiversity and have often been used as a key indicator of the global commitment to increase the area under protection. However, protected areas are not immune to threats and larger changes in landscape level and have been compared to land bridge islands in a sea of   hostile habitat. In recent decades, conservation biologists have changed their focus from managing populations of endangered species on one site to considering larger landscapes as conservation units. Such landscape-scale conservation approaches make sense because the drivers of biodiversity loss - land use and land cover change, fragmentation, overuse and climate change - tend to operate on a large scale. In many cases, the landscape approach makes more sense when considered at the cross-border level, taking into account the adjoining habitat across borders.
