Genus Mycobacterium

Mycobacterium, given its own family, Mycobacteriaceae, is a genus of Actinobacteriae. In this genus over 190 species are recognized. This genus includes pathogenic substances known to cause serious mammalian diseases, including human tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and leprosy (Mycobacterium leprae). Aerobic Mycobacteria. They are bacillary in form, at least in most phases that have so far attracted human microbiological attention; they are straight or slightly curved rods between 0.2 and 0.6 μm wide, and between 1.0 and 10 μm long. They are generally non-motile bacteria, with the exception of the species Mycobacterium marinum, which in macrophages has been shown to be movable. The outer membrane of mycobacteria is. They have capsules, and the rest do not form endospores. M. marinum and perhaps M. Bovis have been shown to be sporulating; however, further research has disputed this. The distinctive feature of all types of Mycobacterium is that the cell wall is thicker than it is in many other bacteria, being hydrophobic, waxy and rich in mycolic acids / mycolates. The cell wall consists of a hydrophobic mycolate layer and a peptidoglycan layer held together by an arabinogalactan, a polysaccharide.
