The education of family medicine (MF) residents requires innovative training models to demonstrate the importance of community medicine (CM) and population health training in residency training. At all levels of training and practice, population and community-based approaches enable clinicians to examine their quality of care for a specific patient population, to make changes to their own system of care and to explore how these changes affect their practice. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires FM residents to receive a structured CM program that includes didactic and experiential activities on topics such as abuse, school health, communicable disease reporting, epidemiology, disaster response, and the development and use of the resource community to address the social determinants of health. These KM skills can be acquired by mastering the following four areas: 1) participation in community health activities; 2) socio-cultural awareness of patient care; 3) use of community health resources; and 4) community participation and assimilation.
