An embolism is the housing of an embolus, a blockage-causing bit of material, inside a blood vessel. The embolus might be a blood coagulation (clots), a fat globule (fat embolism), an air pocket of air or different (gas embolism), or remote material. An embolism can cause incomplete or absolute blockage of blood stream in the influenced vessel. Such a blockage (a vascular impediment) may influence a piece of the body far off from the source of the embolus. An embolism where the embolus is a bit of blood clot is known as a thromboembolism.

An embolism is generally an obsessive occasion, i.e., going with ailment or injury. Now and then it is made purposefully for a restorative explanation, for example, to quit draining or to murder a malignant tumor by halting its blood flexibly. Such treatment is called embolization.
