The importance of chemistry in Medicinal Research is very important. The fundamental goal in drug design is to predict how strongly a given molecule will bind to a target. Due to its impact on society, the design of new drugs has the potential to gather a wide audience, and provides a rare opportunity to introduce several concepts in chemistry and biochemistry.
Drug discovery is the process through which potential new therapeutic entities are discovered by using a combination of computational, experimental, translational, and clinical models. Modern drug discovery involves the identification medicinal chemistry and optimization of those hits to increase the affinity, selectivity (to reduce the potential of side effects), efficacy/potency, metabolic stability (to increase the half-life), and oral bioavailability.
