Compassionate fatigue is a condition characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion which leads to a reduced ability to empathize or feel compassion for others, often defined as the negative cost of caring. It is also referred to as secondary traumatic stress (STS). Burnout and secondary traumatic stress are two interwoven aspects of caring fatigue according to the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Compassion fatigue is seen as the product of working directly with victims of accidents, trauma or illness, especially in the healthcare industry. Individuals working in other assisting occupations can also feel caring exhaustion. Compassion exhaustion, also known as second-hand shock and secondary stress reaction, describes a form of stress that arises from helping or trying to support others who are traumatized or under considerable emotional stress. Compassion fatigue can be a precursor, or a symptom, of other stressors. Since therapists are trained to use compassion and empathy for successful counseling, they are particularly vulnerable to emotional stress and compassionate exhaustion.
