A civil society is made up of groups or organizations working in the interest of citizens but operating outside the governmental and for-profit sectors. It is sometimes called the civilian sector, a term used to differentiate it from the other sectors that make up a functioning society.
The reasons why people should donate money to charities vary across different societal contexts. This article explores the interaction between individual and social reasons for giving in Sweden, a country representing a distinct type of such setting. The purpose of this article is to answer not only the question of how much is given and what, but also to provide an interpretation of why people give and what it means to give in this national context. Social origins theory is used to analyze the results of a national survey on civic participation in Sweden. The results show that donation in Sweden is widespread, small-scale and relatively uniform in different groups of donors. We conclude that the donation is mainly a civil act performed for personal reasons and, to a lesser extent, a civic act with significance for the social position of the donor.
