Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than three months. Chronic pain can result from an initial injury, such as a sprain, or there can be a continuous cause, such as an illness. Other health conditions, such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, decreased appetite and mood changes, often accompany chronic pain. Chronic pain can limit a person's movements, which can reduce flexibility, strength, and endurance. Low back pain is considered chronic if it has been present for more than three months. The type of pain can vary greatly and can be experienced as bone pain, nervous pain or muscle pain. For example, the pain can be painful, burning, stabbing or tingling, sharp or dull, and well defined or vague. The intensity can vary from mild to severe.
