Cachexia is defined as a state of extreme wasting with marked weight loss, anorexia and lassitude. About half of all cancer patients have cachexia syndrome characterized by loss of adipose tissue and skeletal muscle mass. These patients have a shorter survival time compared to that of patients without weight loss. Abnormal metabolism is believed to be the basis of cachexia status in patients with advanced cancer. Cachexia induces cytokines, in particular tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -α, IL-1 and IL-6, is believed to inhibit the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and thus induces weight loss due reduction of fat build up in tissues. Therefore, it is believed that wasting of cancer patients could be avoided and cachexia improved by increasing the activity of LPL. There are two parallel "paths" to open access: open access articles and self-archiving. Open access articles are immediately and freely available on their website, a model funded mainly by fees paid by the author (usually through a research grant). The alternative for a researcher is "self-archiving" (ie publishing in a traditional journal, where only subscribers have immediate access, but to make the article available on their personal websites and / or institutional (including the so-called repositories or archives)), which is a practice authorized by many scholarly journals. Open Access raises practical and political questions for academics, publishers, funders and policy makers, including the return on investment when paying the cost of processing an article to be published in an open access article, or if investments in institutional repositories are to be made and self-archiving should be made mandatory, as provided for in some funds.
