Infant formula, baby formula or baby milk, infant milk is a manufactured food prepared and marketed for feeding babies and infants less than 12 months of age. These are usually prepared for bottle-feeding or cup-feeding. These are prepared from powder mixed with water or liquid with or without additional water. It is represented for special dietary use only as a partial substitute for human milk for infants. The composition of infant formula is designed to be roughly based on a mother's milk approximately after one to three months postpartum. There are however significant differences in the nutrient content of these products. The most commonly used infant formulas is made from purified cow's milk whey and casein as a protein source, a vitamin-mineral mix, a blend of vegetable oils as a fat source, lactose as a carbohydrate source, and other ingredients. Also, there are infant formulas using soybean as a protein source and formulas using protein hydrolysed into amino acids for infants who are allergic to proteins.
