Abnormal Placental Invasion

The incidence of abnormal placental invasion has increased 10-fold over the past 50 years, reflecting the increased number of cesarean sections performed. Management is based on a precise early diagnosis with appropriate multidisciplinary perioperative planning to anticipate and avoid massive obstetric hemorrhage at childbirth. Women at risk should plan to give birth in a facility with the appropriate expertise and resources to manage this condition. We report a case of placenta increta management including the preoperative placement of a balloon catheter of the pelvic artery, prophylactic occlusion of the balloon after delivery of the fetus and resection assisted by embolization of the invaded uterine wall . We examine the incidence, prenatal diagnostic methods, risk factors and management of the abnormally invasive placenta.
