Biography

Ximing Cai is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Ven Te Chow Faculty Scholar in Water Resources. He holds Ph.D. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (1999). He held Postdoctoral Fellow and then joint Research Fellow position at International Food Policy Research Institute and International Water Management Institute. Cai’s current research areas include watershed sustainability, water-energy system analysis and coupled human-natural systems analysis. Cai has authored or co-authored over 80 peer reviewed journal papers, two books and several monographs. He has served as Associate Editor for Water Resources Research and J. of Water Resources Planning and Management and Editor Board of International Water. He has obtained several awards including Outstanding Career Award and Best Paper Award with Water International. He has also served as consultant to the World Bank and United Nations.

Integrated hydrologic-economic modeling and analysis
Impact of human interferences to hydrologic processes
Incorporation of hydroclimatic forecast for water systems operation and management
Integrated assessment on the various scientific and policy issues, including water-energy (particularly biofuel) – food nexus, conflicting human – ecosystem water requirements, climate change impacts on water and agriculture
Development of system analysis models and solution algorithms
