Biography

Dr. Wei Huang earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005 followed by one year as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Utah and four years as a research associate at University of Maryland School of Medicine. Since July 2010 he has been appointed an assistant professor position of biochemistry at Institute of Human Virology University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Research Interest

Dr. Wei Huang works in the areas of carbohydrate chemistry and glycobiology in terms of carbohydrate-based vaccine for HIV and other infectious diseases. Glycan shield on the HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120 has been proved to be the epitope of broadly neutralizing antibody 2G12. To design and synthesize novel carbohydrate-based conjugates mimicking the HIV glycan shield is an HIV vaccine strategy for eliciting 2G12-like neutralizing antibody. Dr. Huang’s another project focuses on glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-based vaccine studies against GPI-related infectious diseases, such as malaria, trypanosome, etc.
