Biography

Dr. Peters is Professor of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Translational Science at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Research, and Director of Research in the Section on Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases. His current research interests include mechanisms of subepithelial fibrosis in asthma, control of immunoglobulin E-mediated pulmonary inflammation in humans, novel ways to define asthma phenotypes, and personalized approaches to asthma therapeutics which include the use of novel phenotypes and pharmacogenomics. He is involved in the NHLBI\s Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP), genetic studies of asthma including TENOR and a genome-wide association study (STAMPEED),and the SPIROMICS COPD initiative, all supported by the NHLBI. He plays a major role in national asthma clinical trial networks including the NHLBI’s Asthma Clinical Research Network and AsthmaNet programs, serving as Principal Investigator of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine site for both programs. He is also an advisor to the Data Coordinating Center of the American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Centers. He has been a member of numerous NIH advisory boards and panels and currently serves as a permanent member of the NIAID’s Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation Research Committee (AITRC) Study Section. Dr. Peters is a fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, and The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and he is a member of the Asthma Subcommittee of the American Thoracic Society. Dr. Peters has authored more than 280 articles.
