He has over 20 years of experience in clinical practice in Intensive Care Medicine.
He is a member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the European Society of Epidemiology and Preventive Cardiology, the Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care Council – American Heart Association, the International Society for Education & Research on Exercise Intolerance (ISEREI). He had been a member of National Council of Transplantation (National Transplant Organization, EOM) for 6 years. He has also been a member of the National and the Panorthodox Committee on Bioethics and Deontology. He is a founder member and first President of the Greek Society of Ergospirometry, Exercise and Rehabilitation.
Research
He studied clinical epidemiology in Northwestren University in Chicago and from 1982-1986 his main research interest was epidemiology and pathophysiology of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
During the period 1984-1993 his main research interest was Basic Research on experimental studies on myocardial infarction, mechanical support of the circulatory system and the heart and lung interaction.
He organized and developed the cardiopulmonary exercise test and rehabilitation lab and undertook (1993) research programs on pathophysiology of heart failure, the diagnostic and prognostic value of different indices of the cardiopulmonary exercise test and the effect of various modalitiew of exercise training for the chronic heart failure patients.
Mechanical support of the circulatory system, Heart failure, Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and rehabilitation in CHF patients, sepsis and microcirculation, infections (VAP, acalculous cholecystitis, etc.), Sedation in ICU, and polyneuromyopathy of critically ill patients (pathophysiology, prevention and treatment).
