Biography

Dr. Hongli Sun is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of South Dakota (USD). Prior to his joining at USD, he worked as a Research Fellow in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences at the University of Michigan. Dr. Sun earned his Ph.D. degree in Cell Biology from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China at 2007. Dr. Sun’s research seeks to understand the underlying mechanism by which adult stem cell and macrophages behaviors are regulated by micro-environmental cues during bone/cartilage tissue regeneration. Inspired by the fundamental findings in stem cell/developmental biology, they are devoted to developing novel stem cell/nano-biomaterials-based translational strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Dr. Sun has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals including Biomaterials, Stem Cells, and Tissue Engineering. In addition, he serves as a manuscript and grant reviewer in bone, stem cells and tissue engineering related fields. Dr. Sun’s long term goal is to develop novel therapeutics for musculoskeletal related diseases, including large bone/cartilage defects. We are currently interested in the following projects: 1) Promote endogenous bone formation by developing bio-mimicking nanofibrous 3D scaffolds; 2) Promote challenged bone repair by targeting angiogenesis and inflammation via local drug delivery; 3) Study the role of adult stem cells and 3D microenvironment in cancer bone metastasis and vascular calcification.
