    One of the most common causes of disability worldwide, bipolar disorder (BD) affects more than 1 percent of people, most commonly around the age of 20. The majority of cases, according to previous longitudinal studies of high-risk populations, experience major depressive disorder (MDD) as an index mood episode prior to the first (hypo) manic episode.
