His primary research focus over the past 12 years has been in HIV in Kenya, South Africa, India, Pakistan, and the United States.  Dr. Mwamburi has extensive clinical trial and research experience in urban and rural settings in sub-Saharan Africa. Most recently, in response to the changing patterns in disease burden in limited resource settings, Dr. Mwamburi has shifted his focus in research to non-communicable diseases in rural Kenya including characterizing the burden of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, depression, cancer, and maternal and child health. The research involves understanding the role of social, cultural, and economic factors as well as food security and nutrition on access to prevention and management services for care for non-communicable disorders.

In addition to his research, Dr. Mwamburi serves on the Tufts University Institutional Review Board, has trained, advised and mentored, numerous graduate, doctorate students, and junior faculty here at Tufts University.  Dr. Mwamburi also played an instrumental role in establishing the Tufts Center for Global Public Health.
