Biography

I had my early Quranic and Western education in my home town-Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, to  read Medicine and was awarded MB;BS degree in 1981.
My residency training in Ophthalmology from 1986 to 1993 was largely obtained at the Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Kaduna. The training was rounded-up at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, England during a one year (1992/1993) clinical attachment which was funded by a scholarship for my out-standing performance by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. My sub-specialty training in Vitreo-retinal and laser surgery was obtained at the El-Maghraby Eye Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during a one year (1995/1996) clinical fellowship awarded by the prestigious El-Maghraby Foundation of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
My professional, research and academic careers all began at the National Eye Centre Kaduna in 1993 and continued at the University of Ilorin where I transferred my service in 2000. Apart from my basic functions as a researcher, academic, and an ophthalmic surgeon, I have been privileged to serve in various positions of responsibility such as:
1.    National Coordinator for the Nigerian Programme for Prevention of Blindness (1994-2000)
2.    Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Kaduna and Ilorin.
3.    Examiner in parts 1 and 2 of both the West African College of Surgeons and The Nigerian National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
4.    Journal Reviewer for 11 reputable international and national journals.
5.    Member of various committees in the University of Ilorin including the Senate.
6.    Member, National Steering Committee on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, Nigeria, from 2007 till date.
7.    Member of the Faculty of Ophthalmology Board, National Post-graduate Medical College of Nigeria, Lagos (Aug 2002 to 2006).
8.    Member, accreditation visiting team of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria to the Departments of ophthalmology of the University of Jos (August 2005); and University   of Ife Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife (September, 2009).
