Biography
Karina Huus performs research and teaches health and ill health among children and adolescents. Her doctoral thesis “Weight gain in children — possible relation to the development of diabetes" is about factors contributing to the development of overweight and obesity among children and if there is a relation between obesity and the mechanism which might contribute to the development of type 1 diabetes. In the last decades many more children in the world have become overweight and obese The World Health Organization defines overweight and obesity as a global epidemic disease. The incidence of type 1 diabetes among children has also increased and there are some hypotheses that argue there is a connection between overweight/ obesity and type 1 diabetes. The work is a part of the All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) study which is an unprecedented prodject in which 17 000 children born in the Swedish provinces Blekinge, Småland, Öland and Östergötland during October 1 1997 and October 1 1999 have been studied. The families have answered questionnaires, and biological samples have been gathered from the children at the time of their birth and at 1, 2.5, 5 and 8-9 years of age.
