Professor Ian Everall obtained his MBChB at Leicester University School of Medicine. He trained in psychiatry at the Bethlem royal and Maudsley Hospitals, London. In 1989 he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship, followed in 1992 by an advanced MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship in the Department of Neuropathology, Institute of Psychiatry
Professor Everall has been at the forefront of research into cellular, molecular and genetic changes in the brain in major psychiatric disorders for over twenty years. His area of interest includes psychosis, major depression, bipolar disorder and cognitive impairment, especially when associated with HIV infection and methamphetamine use which is becoming a growing social and psychiatric concern globally. Professor Everall is currently working on research into blood based biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis of psychosis and autism spectrum disorder, and further refining the molecular neuropathology of schizophrenia
