Biography

Glenda Gray, the previous Executive Director of PHRU, is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand, the Director of the HVTN Africa Programs, a member of the Academy of Sciences in South Africa, a member of the Institute of Medicine, and as of 2014, the President of the Medical Research Council of South Africa. An NRF A rated scientist, she has expertise in the fields of PMTCT, adolescent HIV prevention, HIV vaccine and microbicide research. In 1999, Glenda was awarded a Fogarty Fellowship to study clinical epidemiology. She received the Femina “Woman of the Nineties” award for her contribution to perinatal HIV research, and IAPAC’s “Hero of Medicine” award for work done in the field of HIV treatment. Together with James McIntyre, Glenda was awarded the Nelson Mandela Health and Human Rights Award in 2002 for pioneering work done in the field of PMTCT. In 2009, both Glenda and James received the N’Galy-Mann lectureship at CROI in recognition of their HIV research contribution in South Africa. She was honoured with the Order of the Mapungubwe in Silver by the President of South Africa in 2013 for her excellent life-saving research in mother-to-child transmission of HIV and AIDS that has changed the lives of people in South Africa and abroad. Her work has not only saved lives of many children, but also improved the quality of life for many others with HIV and AIDS.
