Biography

Professor Craig Mellis is a paediatrician and respiratory physician who conducts research in paediatric respiratory medicine (asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic cough), evidence-based medicine, and medical education. A practicing clinician and academic for over four decades, he boasts a varied career that includes founding a medical school. Professor Mellis conducted the first clinical trial in Australian children, of an inhaled corticosteroid for asthma, and was a co-investigator of the first paediatric trial demonstrating the efficacy of a leucotriene receptor antagonist in viral-induced wheezing. He established the first paediatric pulmonary function laboratory in NSW, and has made major contributions to curriculum development for medical students and clinical trainees in paediatric and adult medicine. He is a strong advocate for evidence-based management of children with asthma. He authored a widely-cited literature review on treatment options for acute asthma in children, an important paper on the management of asthma in schools and contributed to the National Asthma Council Australia’s 2014 Australian Asthma Handbook. Professor Mellis co-ordinates regular courses on research methods, and tutors annually at the internationally renowned ‘How to teach Evidence-Based-Medicine’ workshop at McMaster University, Canada, a workshop model he helped replicate at the National University of Singapore. He is Life Member of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children. The foundation (with Management Board chaired by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia), funds research projects to improve the health and welfare of children in Australia. As Chair of its Grants Committee, Professor Mellis helps fund emerging paediatric researchers in Australia.
