Dr. Nel leads IPM’s clinical research strategy in Africa and oversees IPM’s clinical trials and international clinical site development. She works closely with regulatory bodies in Africa and globally to ensure a favourable environment for microbicide research and eventual product access.Previously, Dr. Nel worked as an independent clinical research consultant in drug development. With more than 20 years experience as a clinical research investigator, she has advanced experience in all levels of clinical research in a broad range of therapeutic areas.Dr. Nel has previously worked as a medical officer and lectured in pharmacology, pulmonology and toxicology at the Tygerberg campus of the University of Stellenbosch Medical School. She is an active member of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s product development partnership global health clinical consortium and regulatory executive team.Dr. Nel obtained a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in clinical pharmacology from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, where she also earned a PhD, qualified as a medical doctor and completed a certificate in the senior business programme.
