Amit C Achhra

Biography

 Amit is a post-doctoral fellow having completed his training in medicine (MBBS), public health (MPH) and clinical epidemiology of HIV disease (PhD, UNSW 2012). His research has focussed on: (i) Gaining better understanding of the risk of serious long-term outcomes (particularly those not considered as AIDS, such as cardiovascular disease) in HIV-positive individuals and investigating novel risk factors of these outcomes, such as those related to immunodeficiency, metabolism, and inflammation. The overarching goal is to minimise the risk of serious outcomes in this population. (ii) Optimising management of HIV in low-middle income countries particularly in Asia-Pacific, by targeting issues unique to those settings. His work has spanned several national and international observational studies, including AHOD, TAHOD, INSIGHT and D:A:D cohorts (see the Kirby institute website for details). He has several papers on the topic and has presented at major national and international conferences. He is also passionate about teaching epidemiology and biostatistics and has given lectures and tutorials on the topic. Presently, he is one of the study leaders on HATI study- a large implementation research study on 'Test and Treat' strategies in Indonesia. He also continues to actively pursue his interest in clinical epidemiology of chronic non-AIDS diseases in HIV-positive population.
